The purpose of this bulletin is to notify you of the
negative impact
involving the process of roll sharpening Boron steel blades.
Earth
Metal blades now supplied by CNH as well as other major
suppliers like John Deere, Sunflower, and Kruse are made from Earth
Metal
steel alloy with added Boron. These blades have longer wear
than high
carbon steel disk blades and the previous Earth Metal Steel disk
blades
with out Boron. CNH has been made from Earth Metal Steel with
Boron
since January 2002 and will have "Made in Canada" stamped on them.
As the blades become dull one common method of re-sharpening
blades is rolling the edges. Rolling of Earth Metal
Boron blades can result
in cracking near the edge of the blade caused by the "cold
working" during
the rolling process and or breakage of the "cold worked" edge
in later field
use. We have been informed that cracking and breaking
of roll sharpened
Earth Metal Boron disk will not be covered under warranty by
CNH. The
Rolling method is NOT RECOMMENDED for Earth Metal Boron
blades. It
appears that grinding or shaving methods may be suitable for
re-sharpening these blades if the blade is not overheated by
the
sharpening process.
